Debbie’s Game Day Picks

Norton Malbec Reserva

Argentina has made Malbec its flagship red and Norton Reserva is a great example of a well made wine from this South American country. It is a wine of elegance and complexity. Great purity of fruit with big blackberry, blueberry and plum. The palate is smooth and round, with velvety tannins, spice and tobacco on the long finish.

The Norton Malbec is an excellent red meat wine. If grilled steak, beef fajitas or BBQ dishes are on your Game Day menu look to Malbec for a wine that scores well with any crowd.

No Super Bowl event would be complete without a pot of world class chili. Malbec has just amount of dark fruit, spice and tannin levels to stand up to the heat of a spicy chili. You can feel comfortable passing the ball to Norton Reserva to have enough power and finesse to tackle the spice of your dish.

Jose Cuervo Especial Gold Tequila

Jose Cuervo is one of the most recognized producers of tequila in the world. This spirit was introduced in Mexico almost 200 years ago. The Especial Gold has aromas of freshly ground peppercorn, spice, orange and charred oak. It is dry and smooth with flavors of black pepper, sweet caramel and notes of toffee and vanilla on the finish.

Ceviche with lime and chilies to marinated meats cooked over mesquite or citrus flavored desserts are dishes that go very well with this complex tequila. Try a traditional tequila pairing with the Pulled Pork Enchiladas recipe.

Upstreet White Noize White IPA

Upstreet is one of the Island’s latest breweries dedicated to producing high quality craft beer. There are several offerings available at PEI Liquor including White Noize. This Belgium style white IPA is one of their flagship beers. It is light to medium bodied with moderate carbonization. Tropical fruit notes with hints of bananas and are highlighted by a tangy citrus background. The expected bitterness is toned down by the natural breadiness of the wheat bill.

The “bitter meets sweet” style is a solid choice with dishes featuring a bit of spice. Two staples at most Super Bowl party are chicken wings and nachos, both would be amazing pairings with this Island ale. The White Noize is a great local pairing with the Cilantro and Lime Guacamole recipe.

The crew at Upstreet does an amazing job of letting consumers know what’s “under the cap” of each beer they bottle. The label’s offer food pairing ideas and even suggestions to what music genre to listen to while sipping a certain style. Grab a few of the Upstreet products to try during the next Hockey Night in Canada gathering. The tastes are amazing but so are the conversations that begin around the unique flavor profile of each beer.

IPA’s featuring tropical fruit and citrus notes are ideal partners to gin based cocktails.
